Your Duties:

Stantec's Dartmouth office is currently looking for an Intermediate Automation / Controls Designer / Engineer.  This individual will be an excellent communicator and skilled problem-solver with a strong attention to detail. This is a dynamic work environment where you will play a pivotal role in a diverse range of projects, from initial planning to design to construction.

 

This position is of interest to self-directed individuals.  The individual will be expected to work independently on electrical automation design as an integrated member of an interdisciplinary design team. Responsibilities include the design of complete automation systems including PLC, HMI, AC/DC drive and communication network selections and integration, participation in control panel design and generation of bill of materials, cabling, PLC and HMI programming, and commissioning for commercial, industrial, institutional, public and private facilities.

 

Under the supervision and training of senior staff, the successful candidate will:

  • Help to integrate automation systems using proven hardware.
  • Investigate existing machine operations, automation, control panels and field devices.
  • Conduct research to determine viable solutions for design issues
  • Prepare wiring for safety systems to provide required levels of personnel protection
  • Prepare recommendations for system improvements to meet the project objectives
  • Prepare electrical schematics, panel layouts, interconnect wiring diagrams for the project.
  • Prepare PLC and HMI programming, PLC program cycle flowcharts, and work instructions for the new system.
  • Participate in installation support of the new design
  • Participate in commissioning of the new system
  • Participate in training to maintenance personnel for the new automation system.
  • Complete as-built drawings and support the project after start-up.

 

Your Capabilities and Credentials:
  • Preference provided for candidates who have graduated from a recognized technical college or university and who are eligible for registration with TechNova or Engineers Nova Scotia.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a strong attention to detail are essential.
  • Experience with the application of the Canadian Electrical Code is an asset.
  • Experience with PLC and HMI selection and programming is a definite asset.
  • Experience with AC/DC drive selection and programming is a definite asset.
  • Experience with EtherNet/IP, DeviceNet, DH+ and RIO communication networks is a definite asset.
  • Experience with Allen-Bradley ControlLogix, PLC-5, SLC, FactoryTalk, PanelBuilder, and PowerFlex drive platforms is a definite asset.
  • Experience with the engineered design of personnel safety systems (familiarity with EN-954-1, ISO 13849-1 and SISTEMA software) will be beneficial in this role.
  • Experience with control panel layout design will be beneficial in this role.
  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Office will be beneficial in this role.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience
