    Your Duties

    We are currently seeking an Intermediate Electrical Power System Designer to join our Power Team in our Waterloo, ON office.  As the successful candidate, your interpersonal, communication and problem-solving skills will enable you to exceed client expectations and establish positive working relationships.  In our diversified team environment, you will have an ability to thrive in an organization that is based on client-driven service and individual excellence.


    Responsibilities include:

    • Designing and coordinating power engineering deliverables from conceptual design through detail design under the supervision of project electrical engineers including the following:
      • Electrical Design:
        • Single Line Diagrams (SLD);
        • Protection & Control (P&C) design;
        • Grounding system design and modeling;
        • Equipment arrangements and site layouts including plans, profiles, elevations, sections and installation details;
        • Tie-in to existing facility switchgear systems;
        • Power distribution from 600V – 27.6 kV;
    • Plan and organize work;
    • Provide design input to projects, ensuring technical accuracy and safe and functional code compliant design;
    • Provide input to man-hour and capital cost estimates;
    • Prepare construction work packages;
    • Follow all quality guidelines as set out in the company and the client’s quality assurance manual;
    • Ensure work is performed and completed in a safe manner within defined schedule and deadlines; and
    • Collaborate with teams from other offices/disciplines to deliver on-time, on-budget results.

    Your Capabilities and Credentials

    • College diploma or university Degree in Electrical Technology/Engineering;
    • In-depth understanding of the Ontario Electricity Safety Code (OESC) and it’s practical application for facility and utility-scale power projects;
    • Knowledge of Canadian Electrical Code (CEC); (Knowledge of National Electrical Code (NEC) is an asset);
    • Knowledge and hands-on experience creating system studies and reports and asset including:
      • Load flow and short circuit;
      • Insulation coordination;
      • Arc flash;
      • Ground Potential Rise (GPR), step and touch;
    • Capable of understanding project requirements and developing layouts and electrical diagrams that clearly and correctly convey the construction of the facility/station;
    • Safe site walk-down experience and familiarity with safe work procedures at electrical facilities;
    • Capable of independently gathering required information for design during a site walk-down;
    • Capable of reading, understanding and evaluating electrical equipment vendor drawings and extracting the required information for design purposes;
    • Capable of creating and developing layouts and elevation views drawings using a conceptual single line diagram with limited instructions provided by lead engineer;
    • (Minimum) 3 years of electrical design experience;
    • Experience with low or high voltage design of switchgear, MCCs, and or substations;
    • Experience in design of single line diagrams, power distribution systems, UPS, cable trays, lighting, grounding, equipment layouts, motor schematics, wiring diagrams, control panels and control wiring, and area classification;
    • Able to read, write and communicate fluently in English to perform job functions;
    • Technical report writing aptitude, specifically in creation of work scope documents;
    • Focused on quality with attention to detail;
    • Capable of taking, understanding, and executing direction given by project & discipline management; and
    • Self-monitoring and able to stay on task
