Your Duties

Our Ottawa office is looking for a highly motivated Buildings Electrical Discipline Head to join our growing, multi-disciplinary team.  Responsibilities include technical leadership and mentorship for the buildings electrical discipline staff within the team, supporting the design of electrical systems for commercial, healthcare, industrial, institutional, public and private facilities including power distribution, essential and life safety systems, lighting, lighting controls and roadway/airfield lighting.  The Buildings Electrical Discipline Head will also be responsible for fostering client relationships and helping to generating revenue within the discipline. The role requires a strong team player with business development skills and client focus to support the growth of the Building Engineering Group.



  • Be an active part in developing and mentoring the members of the team, and reviewing the performance or their technical goals as part of their development plans.
  • Prepare and/or review design calculations, reports and specifications for projects.
  • Complete design calculation/decisions spot checks on discipline staff throughout the year to monitor for accuracy, consistency and skill levels across the discipline and track results.
  • Review conceptual design stage on discipline projects.
  • Provide initial direction for conceptual/33% design where project design staff are not fully qualified to do so on their own.
  • Ensure that a Peer Review is completed on all projects, regardless of size.
  • Produce preliminary design sketches and provide senior design support for development of project deliverables.
  • Lead or organize training sessions focused on areas of technical weakness identified through design checks, peer reviews and mentorship.
  • Participate in developing/implementing continuing improvements within the discipline.
  • Develop tools and processes to increase effectiveness of the discipline.
  • Deliver solutions and troubleshooting to support the team on client and technical issues
  • Identify appropriate training opportunities for team staff members.
  • Participate in marketing and business development meetings, client surveys, and local business center improvement plans.
  • Assist with developing the annual business plan and budget for the Business Center and working with the leadership team to achieve key performance indicators.
  • Maintain and grow current business and client relationships.
  • Provide input to the management team on formal and informal training, recruiting and retention of staff.
  • Act as the Business Centre’s primary contact for a minimum of 3 significant clients.
  • Represent Stantec at client meetings, conferences and formal presentations as required.
  • Remain up to date with current team and industry technical issues.
  • Act as a senior project manager or senior technical lead on large projects.
  • Act as the lead discipline proposal manager on large opportunities.
  • Review proposed technical implementation plan for proposals by others.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

Capabilities and Credentials:

  • Minimum 10 years of experience working within a Consulting Design Firm, with a focus on Building Services Design and Project Management in varied projects.
  • Electrical engineering degree and registration as an professional engineer in Ontario or a senior C.E.T. with equivalent experience and abilities is required.
  • Electrical design experience in low, medium and high voltage, systems lighting, power distribution, grounding, fire alarm, communications and security systems, and industrial design experience.
  • Thorough knowledge and familiarity with Canadian electrical standards and building codes.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent verbal communication and technical writing skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and experience.
  • Sound knowledge of business development activities and well respected in the industry
  • Must demonstrate a thorough understanding of project construction and delivery methodologies
  • Ability to manage work in a team-oriented environment and see major/complex projects through to completion.
  • Understanding of multidisciplinary coordination through design and the construction process.
  • Proven experience of leading other engineers and/or designers
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a high proficiency in English is required; French proficiency considered an asset.
  • Experience of any of the following would be a definite asset:
    • knowledge of Revit and/or BIM;
    • alternate procurement processes;
    • low energy/net zero projects and sustainable design;
    • LEED® accreditation; and
    • working within alternate delivery project teams.
