The Geohazard and Geomorphology team at Stantec uses expert knowledge, principles and experience of Earth surface processes and landforms to help clients achieve their economic, environmental and safety goals by locating resources, recognizing and minimizing the impact of physical constraints, mitigating hazards, reducing risk and engineering solutions.


The Geohazards and Geomorphology team at Stantec provides expertise in:

  • Terrain Analysis (Canadian and European methods)
  • Aggregate Mapping
  • Landslide Hazards (including erosion) and Risk Assessments (qualitative and quantitative)
  • River Hazards (flood mapping, bank erosion, scour and river changes using Canadian and osgen methods)
  • Hydraulic and Hydrologic Engineering and Flood Modeling
  • Geotechnical and Hydrotechnical Investigations
  • Slope Mitigation 
  • River Restoration and Mitigation
  • Consequence Assessment (including HAZUS)


In Burnaby BC, we are now looking for a Junior-Intermediate Terrain Scientist or Geomorphologist to join our team. This individual will interact with geotechnical engineering, soils, vegetation and reclamation teams.

Your Duties

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • terrain mapping and terrain stability mapping
  • bioterrain mapping
  • ability to plan and execute baseline terrain field surveys following Describing Terrestrial Ecosystems in the Field (BC Ministry of Environment, 2010)
  • ability to apply Terrain Classification System for British Columbia (Howes and Kenk, 1997)
  • Work as crew leader for field planning and logistics
  • Responsible for safety during field operations
  • Conduct literature reviews
  • Report writing
  • Work with the team to prepare reports, studies, specifications, plans, and designs for projects
  • Keep Project Manager informed of workload and any changes in project scope or additional services
  • Keep accurate time records for billing purposes and submit them on a weekly basis
  • Help out in whatever duties are required to deliver a quality product on schedule
  • Travel associated with project work may be required, generally, short (5-10 days) interprovincial/territorial trips

Your Capabilities and Credentials

The successful candidate should possess the following qualifications: 

  • B.Sc. in physical geography, engineering geology or related field with 3 to 5 years of work experience is preferred
  • Registered or qualified to register with EGBC within a reasonable time (less than 12 months)
  • 3 to 5 years or more of experience in terrain sciences, including terrain mapping, field investigations and report writing in British Columbia and Alberta
  • Strong knowledge of glacial and non-glacial processes
  • Strong familiarity with the Terrain Classification System for BC (Howes and Kenk, 1997), Mapping and Assessing Terrain Stability Guidebook (Forest Practices Code, 1999) and The Canadian System of Soil Classification (1998)
  • Proficient with softcopy mapping (PurVIEW, DAT/EM Summit)
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS 10 (or higher)
  • Very strong technical skill set in 3D air photo interpretation especially related to glacial landforms and geological processes; experience with other data sets such as LiDAR is a benefit
  • Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite of Products
  • Experience with scoping, budgeting and leading soils and terrain component of environmental assessments
  • Knowledge of geomorphic and pedogenic processes
  • Willingness to travel and participate in remote field work in British Columbia, Alberta and Northern Canada and ability to adapt to unpredictable field conditions
  • Physically fit and able to endure hiking in rugged terrain
  • Exhibit strong communications and writing skills
  • Experience in writing technical reports
  • Work effectively in a team environment
  • Fluent in English
  • A valid driver’s license

While not required, experience with any of the following would be considered an asset:

  • Experience operating quads, snowmobiles, and boats
  • Experience undertaking soils surveys
  • Good outdoor and survival skills and experience working in remote areas
