We are currently looking for a Lead Mechanical Engineer to work with our Oil & Gas Facilities group in our Calgary Quarry Park office. The primary role for the Lead Mechanical Engineer is to take a lead role in a portfolio of work, and where suitable manage and mentor supporting department engineers working on related projects. 

Your Duties

  • Oversee and manage the quality of project deliverables.
  • Lead and mentor other Mechanical Engineers.
  • Effectively manage multi-discipline technical staff and promote team spirit to execute projects successfully.
  • Develop client relationships and support business development to help ensure project backlog.
  • Collaborate with other business centers in Stantec (if required) to execute projects and secure resources.
  • Understand and direct work within Stantec's quality control guidelines.
  • Become a champion of Stantec's EH&S program, with a focus on safety in the field.
  • Support development of project execution plans.
  • Project tracking/monitoring – budget and schedule with the help of project control personnel.
  • Manage and execute mechanical engineering deliverables on multiple projects in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ensure compliance with project plan and procedures.
  • Define and manage mechanical scope requirements including man-hour estimates, schedules, DBM development.
  • Complete manpower planning for assigned projects and participate in employee recruiting where required.
  • Support the development of construction contracts and the tender/analysis/award process
  • Support design with constructability in mind.
  • Supervise and stamp engineering documents and drawings as required.
  • Prepare and/or review/approve mechanical equipment specifications, datasheets and procurement support documents.
  • Execute and/or direct technical bid evaluations (TBE's) for equipment.
  • Perform and/or review/approve engineering calculations.
  • Participate in client/vendor/contractor meetings potentially including HAZOP, 3D model reviews and design reviews.
  • Ensure appropriate reference material is utilized at all times.
  • Ensure all work is completed with safety of paramount concern.
  • Develop and/or review/approve mechanical drawings (isometrics, orthos, and occasionally P&ID's).
  • Development and/or review/approval of Construction Work Packages (CWP’s).
  • Develop and/or review/approve tie-in lists and line lists.
  • Develop and/or oversee the development of construction contracts and the tender/analysis/award process.
  • Consideration of operability as part of design.
  • Complete required mechanical calculations for equipment sizing, material selection, etc.
  • Ensure appropriate application of codes and standards (both legislated and customer-specific).

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Possess a bachelor’s degree (minimum) in engineering (preferably Mechanical) from an accredited university.
  • 12 or more years of engineering experience.
  • Professional Engineering designation with APEGA.
  • Engineering experience supporting projects from conception through construction.
  • Extensive Oil/Gas Industry experience required.
  • Experience with facility retrofit (brown-field) projects is an asset.
  • Field experience is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering design principles and applicable ASME, CSA, API, TEMA, ASTM, NACE codes and standards.
  • Proven mentoring skills and desire to work with and encourage junior staff.
  • Ability to review and approve work.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, and a proven ability to write clear, thorough technical reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple jobs/projects.
  • Proven problem solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to perform in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Detailed understanding of and ability to execute/work with project deliverables such as Process Flow Diagram, P&ID, Isometrics, General Arrangements, etc.
  • Detailed understanding of various equipment used in oil & gas such as vessels, tanks, heat exchangers & coolers, heaters, rotating equipment (pumps and compressors), packaged equipment, valves & specialty items.
  • Strong understanding of material selection to support design of process piping and equipment
  • Knowledge of fabrication and construction techniques and processes.
